Pune, 2nd June 2026: The long-awaited pedestrian foot over-bridge at NDA (Chandni) Chowk in Kothrud has entered its final phase and is likely to open for the public by the end of June. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sped up the work after delays caused by a proposed Metro skywalk connection.

The redevelopment of Chandni Chowk, which included eight traffic ramps and a widened main road, has eased congestion in the area. However, the lack of a pedestrian bridge remained a major issue for residents and commuters, especially those crossing the busy highway to catch Mumbai-bound buses.

With nearly one lakh vehicles using the junction daily, crossing the road became increasingly dangerous due to fast-moving traffic and the wider carriageway. Several pedestrian accidents in the past had also raised concerns about safety and increased demands for a proper crossing facility.

The bridge project was originally expected to be completed by December 2024. However, work slowed after Metro authorities proposed building a skywalk connected to the bridge. As the Metro project faced delays, NHAI decided to reject the proposal and continue the pedestrian bridge work independently.

The new bridge is around 125 meters long and 6.6 meters wide. Construction from the Mumbai-side bus stop to the Iranian hotel side has already been completed. Authorities are now working on installing the final iron staircase near the hotel side, which is expected to be ready by June 15.

Highlighting the difficulties faced by pedestrians, local resident Sachin Murmure said, “Vehicles move at high speed here and there is no proper way to cross the road. Women and senior citizens face the most trouble. The bridge opening will bring huge relief to everyone.”

Project engineer Amol Bhure said, “Work on the iron staircase near the Iranian hotel side is currently underway, and we are aiming to complete the remaining work by mid-June.”
