Pune, 6th October 2026: COEP Technological University and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) have jointly taken the initiative to establish the Advanced Ergonomics and Human Factors Research Centre (AEHFRC) at COEP’s Research and Innovation Park in Chikhali. The centre is expected to be the first of its kind in India and will involve a combined investment of ₹105 crore.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the two institutions for setting up the centre. Spread across around 38,000 square feet, the facility will aim to strengthen India’s indigenous research and development capabilities and promote innovation in line with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The centre will focus on research, testing, validation, training, innovation and industry collaboration. It will also work towards developing human-centred technologies, strengthening Indian standards and creating indigenous solutions for emerging technological and industrial requirements.
COEP Technological University Vice-Chancellor Dr Sunil Bhirud said, “COEP Technological University has been consistently working to convert research into solutions with a wider social impact. This centre will provide a unique platform for interdisciplinary research, innovation and industry collaboration in the field. It will contribute to the development of Indian standards and indigenous technologies while helping create skilled manpower capable of addressing national and global challenges.”
Dr Reji Mathai of ARAI said, “As technology becomes increasingly human-centred, ergonomics and human factors play an important role in ensuring safety, usability and user well-being. AEHFRC will play an important role in strengthening India’s capabilities in human-centred design and innovation.”
The initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry while creating opportunities for advanced research, technology development and innovation in ergonomics and human factors.
