Pune, 17 December 2025: City has witnessed its coldest first half of December in a decade, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The average minimum temperature recorded between December 1 and 15, 2025, stood at 10.66°C, significantly lower than any year since 2014.
In comparison, average minimum temperatures during the same period over the past decade mostly remained above 13°C and often crossed 15°C.
The cold spell has been particularly noticeable at the Shivajinagar weather station, where minimum temperatures dropped to single digits on eight consecutive days this month.
This marks the highest number of single-digit minimum temperature days in December since 2018, indicating an unusually intense early-winter chill for the city.
However, air quality across Pune continues to remain unhealthy, with the city recording an average Air Quality Index (AQI) above 200. Experts note that winter conditions such as low wind speed and temperature inversion often trap pollutants close to the ground, worsening air quality.
