PMC will issue notices and fines to commercial establishments not segregating wet and dry waste.
Health inspectors are now ordered to inspect 21 properties daily and report violations.
The move follows rising complaints of mixed waste from business hubs causing sanitation issues.
Pune, 1st August 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun taking strict action against commercial property owners who fail to segregate wet and dry waste as mandated by law.
Officials have noticed that many business establishments, especially in market areas and along major roads, continue to dump mixed waste, causing hygiene and operational problems.
Despite having clear guidelines, many shopkeepers and business owners are ignoring their responsibility to separate waste. This has led to an increase in mixed garbage, making waste processing more difficult.
The civic body has now directed health inspectors to carry out daily checks of at least 21 commercial properties and submit reports. Violators will be issued direct notices, followed by financial penalties.
Even though PMC collects around 250 tonnes of garbage each night from key business zones, much of it is found to be unsegregated. The problem becomes worse as many shopkeepers leave their garbage outside after closing hours without separating wet and dry waste. This leads to foul smells and unhygienic conditions in busy areas.
To address this, PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department has launched a campaign to ensure strict compliance. According to Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam, inspectors will not just check compliance daily but also immediately serve notices to those breaking the rules. He added that the civic body will no longer tolerate negligence and strict fines will soon follow.
The action is based on guidelines issued under the Environment Protection Act of 1986 and the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016. These laws require all commercial property holders to segregate waste at the source and maintain cleanliness around their establishments. However, PMC officials say most business owners are not following these basic rules.
With this new drive, PMC aims to improve cleanliness across the city and reduce the burden on waste processing units by curbing the flow of mixed garbage from commercial areas.
