Pune: Convicted inmate escapes temporary jail in Yerawada

Pune: An inmate lodged in a temporary jail at Yerawada escaped on the pretext of relieving himself on Sunday night. The jail administration has filed a complaint against the inmate at the Yerawada police station.

The suspect has been identified as Anil Vitthal Vetal, a resident of Ganeshnagar in Digrajwadi at Koregaon Bhima. Police constable Vishal Arun Jadhav (35) has filed a complaint against Vetal at the Yerawada police station.

To prevent the coronavirus outbreak in Yerawada central jail, the authorities have set up a temporary jail, where the new inmates are being kept. Vetal was convicted and sentenced by a court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) in Shirur on June 23. After the judgment, Vetal was transferred to the temporary jail at Yerawada. On Sunday night, Vetal asked the policemen on duty to take him to the washroom. After entering the toilet, he removed the latch and fled through the gallery area. Police Inspector Dinesh Gurjar is further investigating the case.

Last month also, two inmates - Harshad Hanif Sayyad (20), a suspect in a chain snatching case, registered at Khadki police station and Aakash Babulal Pawar (24), a suspect in an attempt to murder case lodged at Wakad police station - lodged in a temporary jail at the girls hostel in Yerawada had escaped. They were later arrested by Pune police from different locations.
