Pune, 11 March 2026: The gas supply to crematoriums in the city has stabilised after the availability of propane and butane improved following a decision by the central government.
With the shortage resolved, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has restarted the use of gas-based cremation units for last rites across the city.
According to PMC Electrical Department head Manisha Shekatkar, Hindustan Petroleum has currently supplied 10 gas cylinders to the civic body, and the supply is expected to remain regular in the coming days. The city presently has 20 gas cremation units and 10 electric cremation units in operation.
Each cremation requires around 30–35 kilograms of gas, while the cost of one cylinder is approximately ₹4,600. Officials said the city also has sufficient electric and traditional wood-based cremation facilities, ensuring that residents will not face any difficulty in performing last rites.
Cremation services are continuing smoothly at facilities such as Yerawada and Kharadi, with alternative arrangements kept ready if required. The PMC spends nearly ₹20 lakh per month on electric crematorium operations, but many citizens prefer them as an environmentally friendly option.
Shekatkar said the civic body is in constant communication with fuel companies to maintain the gas supply and that the overall situation is under control.
“Cremation services in the city are functioning smoothly and necessary arrangements are in place. Citizens need not worry, as the administration is ensuring that there will be no disruption in the process,” she said.
