Pune: A message on WhatsApp and Facebook went viral in Pune on Thursday when a Pune doctor was shocked to see the apathy shown by at least 10 autorickshaw drivers on Tilak Road when they didn’t stop to help an injured biker.
Dr Yogesh Gurjar, who was present at the site of the accident, said that the patch of the road had become slippery due to ongoing levelling work for the road side passage for connecting it to the storm water drainage.
While speaking to Sakal Times, Gurjar added, “The girl was in pain and I noticed that she was bleeding from her ear. I sought help from rickshaw drivers but no one stopped. Manisha Dharne, a local Shiv Sena activist who reached the spot, offered to help. Dharne then took the girl to nearby Harjeevan Hospital for treatment.” he added Adhav condemns inaction
Gurjar urged social activist Dr Baba Adhav to appeal to rickshaw drivers to be of some help in such situations and show some sympathy and humanity if they come across such incidents. Reacting to the incident, Adhav condemned the inhuman act of rickshaw drivers but said that not just rickshaw drivers but common citizens too are scared to help accident victims due to the fear of police.
Gurjar said that considering that it was raining on Thursday morning, the slush had made the road near Wai Urban Bank extremely precarious.
Sena leader helps
Vidyarthi Sena leader Manisha Dharne expressed disappointment over the fact that many rickshaw drivers chose to drove past the spot without bothering to respond to the pleas made by Dr Gurjar or others in the crowd.
Dharne who then offered to help the girl and took her to a nearby private hospital said that the girl was allowed to go after primary treatment.
Dharne said that she immediately contacted Pune Mayor Mukta Tilak seeking her attention towards the shoddy work done by PMC contractor.
Mayor intervenes
Dharne said that with Tilak’s intervention, the slush was cleared from the road. When Sakal Times contacted Mukta Tilak, she said that she immediately asked Tilak Road ward office to clear the road to avoid any further accidents.
