Pune, October 18, 2025: Commuters can look forward to significant relief as the double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk is anticipated to be fully functional by the end of December. The new flyover is expected to greatly alleviate traffic congestion on Ganeshkhind Road, which is among the busiest roads in the city.
Yogesh Mhase, the Metropolitan Commissioner of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), mentioned that the 1.7-kilometer flyover features a two-lane ramp connecting Aundh and Baner to Shivajinagar, along with a three-lane ramp from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan.
A part of the flyover stretching from Aundh to Shivajinagar was inaugurated a few months ago by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The section on Baner Road is scheduled to open next month, while the final segment connecting Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan is anticipated to be functional by the end of December.
According to Mhase, the flyover's full operation will aid in removing traffic bottlenecks and enhancing vehicle flow in the University vicinity. Enhancing the project's importance, the flyover also includes a metro line on its top level — the Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3.
The line, featuring 23 stations, is anticipated to be finished by March 2026, with trial operations already in progress. Once in service, it will significantly cut down travel time for thousands of daily commuters traveling between Pune city and the IT hub of Hinjawadi.
