Pune, 2nd September 2026: Pune could soon see the launch of e-bike taxi services, following the implementation of the state’s new policy for app-based passenger transport companies.

Uber and Rapido have approached the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) seeking official permission to operate e-bike taxis in the city. The applications have been received by the RTO, which will now begin the verification process.

The Pune RTO is preparing to form a special team to examine whether the companies meet the requirements laid down under the state’s aggregator policy.

The team is also expected to visit the local offices of Uber and Rapido to verify the information submitted by the companies.

The team will focus on key areas including:

  • Technical condition of e-bikes

  • Required permits and documents

  • Compliance with aggregator policy guidelines

  • Operational arrangements of the companies in Pune

Pune Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad said the applications from both companies will be examined against the safety and regulatory requirements before the RTO submits its report to the State Transport Authority.

“Applications have been received from Uber and Rapido to start e-bike taxi services in Pune. Their compliance with the aggregator policy and safety requirements will be thoroughly examined, and a report will be submitted to the STA,” Gaikwad said.

Once the RTO completes its inspection, the detailed report will be forwarded to the STA. The state authority will then review the findings and decide whether Uber and Rapido should be granted final permission to operate e-bike taxi services in Pune.

The move marks the next step towards introducing app-based electric two-wheeler passenger services in the city, but the services can begin only after the required regulatory approvals are completed.
