Pune, 5th September 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed spending ₹88 crore on footpath repairs and reconstruction across several parts of the city.
The proposal covers major roads including Jangli Maharaj Road, Fergusson Road, Karve Road, Bajirao Road, Laxmi Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Law College Road, Ganeshkhind Road, Aundh Road and Pashan-Baner Road.
The proposed works also include Aundh ITI Road, Pune-Mumbai Road, Bibwewadi, Sahakarnagar, Shivdarshan, Salisbury Park, Hadapsar, Mundhwa and Kondhwa.
Former Opposition Leader Ujjwal Keskar, Suhas Kulkarni and former corporator Prashant Badhe have opposed the tender and demanded that it be cancelled. They questioned why only seven days had been given for submitting bids.
They alleged that the tender process was designed to benefit certain contractors and claimed that some civic officials may have vested interests in the process. Complaints have been submitted to Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Guardian Minister Sunita Pawar, Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol and Minister Chandrakant Patil.
The complainants also criticised the practice of repeatedly removing and rebuilding existing footpaths instead of identifying areas that genuinely require repairs. They called for an end to what they described as unnecessary spending on rebuilding footpaths.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Divate said,"a complaint has been received regarding the work. I was not aware of this tender. I have asked for a report to determine where the ₹88 crore allocation came from and what works are included in the proposal."
The proposed tender has now come under scrutiny over the short bidding period, the need for the proposed works and allegations of repeated expenditure on existing footpaths.
