Pune, 2nd September 2026: Police have fixed a limit of four bass and four top units for sound systems used during Ganesh immersion processions. The decision was discussed with representatives of Ganesh mandals, with both sides reaching an understanding on the limit as part of efforts to control noise pollution during the festival.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has warned that mandals exceeding the prescribed limit will face strict action. Even the addition of a single bass or top unit could result in a criminal case, while the sound system may also be seized.
The decision comes amid growing complaints from citizens about excessive noise during Ganeshotsav and Dahi Handi celebrations. Residents in several parts of the city have demanded restrictions on DJ systems and called for a quieter, DJ-free Ganesh festival.
Police have made it clear that mandals will not be allowed to increase the number of sound units through additional or concealed equipment. The four-bass and four-top limit will apply during immersion processions, and violations will not be given any concessions.
Police have also prohibited the use of pressure-made and plasma equipment. Mandals found using these devices could face criminal action, and the equipment will be seized.
Organisers will be responsible for ensuring that their sound systems remain within the permitted limits and comply with noise pollution regulations.
The stricter police position follows increasing public opposition to high-volume DJ systems during festivals. Citizens recently gathered near Gopal Krishna Gokhale Chowk to protest against DJs and demand stronger restrictions.
A delegation of senior journalists also met Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and urged the police to make the Ganesh festival DJ-free. With complaints about excessive noise increasing, the police have indicated that festival celebrations will not be allowed to override noise-control rules.
If a mandal uses more than four bass and four top units, a criminal case will be registered and the sound system will be seized. The use of pressure-made and plasma equipment is also prohibited. Mandals must follow the law while celebrating the festival, or strict action will be taken.
