Pune Police officials busted a gang of seven members on Thursday, who were allegedly involved in robbing goods carrying trucks on the Pune highway.
As per reports, seven members of the gang have been arrested by the Pune Rural Police. The officials revealed, the gang would monitor each vehicle carrying costly goods and strategically abduct the drivers on the highway.
After suspecting the movement of two trucks, Pune Rural Police launched an operation to catch the gang red-handed.
"Since there were already some cases of similar crime Pune rural police were tracking these accused for long. Yesterday, when they were committing a similar crime, a team of Pune police's local branch suspected the movement of two trucks and followed them. The accused broke the barricade and divider at several locations at highway after getting to know the police is following them. However, they were arrested near Shirur Tehsil of Pune," informed Superintendent of Police (Rural Pune), Sandip Patel to ANI.
The police found trucks full of cigarettes worth Rs 4 crore, along with it they also found the abducted drivers and rescued them.
Further, Mr Patil added, "Police have recovered trucks of cigarettes worth Rs 4 crore and rescued the abducted drivers. Some of the accused who managed to escape in sugarcane fields during the operation were also arrested later by the police."
According to sources, the thieves belonged to Devdas, Madhya Pradesh and previously have been booked under similar cases in other states as well. According to ANI reports, more than 11 cases have been registered against the gang.
