Pune: A day before, on Saturday (Ocotber 18), torrential rains caused water-logging on the Lohegaon Wagholi main road. It was not simply the rain that caused the road to look like a river, but the lack of a proper storm water drainage system and wrongly covered up natural water streams and the illegal construction over it which wreaked havoc.
The Lohegaon area has been included in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits for a long time now. Despite this, there is a lack of basic infrastructural facilities in the area. The Dadachi Vasti area, Gurudwara Colony, Datta Mandir area is now under PMC limits for the past 40 years. However, these areas are yet to get basic facilities like a monsoon storm water and drainage line. This is the major cause behind waterlogging happening on the main road of Lohegaon and Wagholi.
A few hours of torrential rains had caused the Lohegaon Wagholi road to submerge under knee-deep water. As a result, several two wheelers and four wheelers were damaged after motorists tried to wade through the water. There were many potholes on the road due to which accidents were also happening. Also, water logging caused mosquito breeding in the area and hence citizen's health is also compromised.
Megha Powar, a local resident said, "Citizens have to face this issue every year during the monsoon season. PMC should look into it and start drainage and storm water pipeline works."
Suhas Jagtap, Assistant Municipal Commissioner from Nagar Road Ward Office of PMC said, "We have already informed the main department of PMC regarding the monsoon stormwater line to be set up. The work will start after the budget for the work is allocated and approved."
