Pune: Home delivery of modaks on demand amid COVID-19 lockdown

Pune: The Ganesh Festival brings 10 days of joy and the festival can never be complete without modaks crowned with a drizzle of ghee. Modak is one of the most famous sweets in Maharashtra, made especially during Ganesh Festival.

There are number of flavours of modaks available in the market but homemade modaks are always a better choice. This year amid the coronavirus imposed lockdown the direct sale of modaks is low as people are preferring home delivery of the delicacy.

City-based entrepreneur Suruchi Joshi who sells ‘ukdiche modak’ every year during the 10-day festival is flooded with orders this year. “Every year, the response for ukdiche modak is amazing. This year too, we have received many orders but this time, people are looking out for home deliveries of modak, Suruchi informs.

“People are ready to shell out some extra amount but are going for online and home delivery option. Amid the lockdown, Puneities are celebrating the festival in low grandeur. People are concerned about hygiene standards. To ensure the good quality food, we are taking all precautionary measures before we start preparing the modaks,” she added.

Many people have stated fear of the novel coronavirus and it has led many customers to approach home delivery of sweets this year. Instead of packaged sweet, many are choosing for fresh homemade sweet delicacies.

Janhavi Joglekar, a housewife said, “Every year, I prefer a store visit to get modaks for the Ganesh Festival but this year the situation is grim. This year, I have gone for online shopping even for modaks. Though the prices have gone up for the delicacy, safety comes first.”

Lockdown has cast its shadow on the 10-day festival. With online darshan and virtual aarti, people in the city are celebrating the festival in low key style.
