Pune: TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) is becoming a life saver for many elderlies in India. For patients suffering from Aortic Stenosis, the medical procedure is giving a good chance to live a healthy life.

In a recent development, a 72-year-old from Pune successfully underwent heart valve replacement with TAVI. The surgery was recently conducted at city-based hospital.

This new minimally invasive medical procedure repairs the valve without removing the old damaged valve. TAVI which is considered as less painful than the traditional open-heart surgery was performed on the 72-year-old who was suffering from aortic stenosis.

Dr Krishna Dhoot, a cardiologist from Noble Hospital, Pune, said, "We performed the TAVI procedure on a high-risk patient recently. The patient had undergone CABG with bilateral carotid endarterectomy in 2008 and permanent pacemaker in 2012."

"Usually, in such high-risk cases, open-heart surgery is the option that many experts give. But we started with this relatively new procedure called TAVI. By using this procedure, we can operate on the patient in a minimally invasive way. The recovery time is fast and a patient is discharged home just in two to three days post-surgery," he added.

The patient on the condition of anonymity said, "I was unable to breathe normally. I had stopped doing my daily activities. I did not wish to undergo any big surgery. But now post the TAVI procedure, just in two days I had started walking in my house. It has been a month now that I am operated and I am able to do my routine activities . I am happy that i can live a healthy life now."
