Pune, 8th July 2026: The water discharge from Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River was reduced to 18,271 cusecs at 12.30 pm on Wednesday (July 8) after rainfall in the dam catchment area eased. Earlier in the day, the irrigation department had been releasing 27,203 cusecs of water due to a rapid rise in reservoir levels following intense overnight rainfall.
The catchment region received heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours, leading to a sharp increase in water storage across the four dams supplying Pune. According to official rainfall data recorded till 6 am on Wednesday, Temghar received 245 mm of rain, followed by Varasgaon with 189 mm, Panshet with 171 mm, and Khadakwasla with 101 mm.
The continuous rainfall overnight forced authorities to increase the release of water from Khadakwasla Dam in phases to safely manage the rising reservoir levels.
The release of water from the dam began at 842 cusecs shortly after midnight and was gradually increased as inflows continued. By 5.30 am, the discharge had reached 27,203 cusecs, which remained in place through the morning.
However, with rainfall intensity reducing after sunrise and inflows slowing, officials reviewed the reservoir situation and decided to lower the discharge to 18,271 cusecs from 12.30 pm.
The irrigation department said reservoir levels and weather conditions are being closely monitored, and water discharge will be regulated depending on rainfall and inflows into the dam system.
Residents living along the Mutha River are advised to remain cautious, as the release may be revised again if rainfall in the catchment intensifies.
