Pune Metro recorded around 3.1 lakh passengers a day in September, reflecting a steady rise in demand. While Ganeshotsav contributed to the increase, Metro officials said passenger traffic has been growing beyond the festival period as well.

The administration expects ridership to rise further with the opening of the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro corridor, which is expected in the coming days. Officials estimate that the new corridor could bring nearly 50,000 additional passengers to the Metro network over the next few months.

Maha Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar said passenger convenience is being prioritised as the network expands. He said the administration is procuring additional trains as new routes are opened and more areas are connected to the Metro network.

Regular commuters have also been asking Maha Metro to introduce six-coach trains on the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi and Swargate-PCMC corridors, particularly during peak hours.

Maha Metro officials said a detailed proposal for six-coach trains has already been prepared and will be submitted to the Central government for approval.

For the immediate future, Maha Metro is focusing on increasing the number of trains and reducing the gap between services. The five-minute interval could be brought down to four minutes and, depending on demand, eventually to three minutes.

The introduction of six-coach trains will be taken up at a later stage after the required approvals are received.
