Pune, 14 July 2024: Pune Metro’s much-anticipated Omkareshwar pedestrian bridge, uniquely designed in the shape of a veena, is nearing completion and is expected to be opened to the public in August. The 105-metre-long cable-stayed structure spans the Mula River near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden, linking the nearby metro station with Shaniwar Peth. This will significantly improve access for thousands of daily commuters coming from the city’s historic core.

By directly connecting the metro station to key areas such as Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, and other busy commercial zones, the bridge is poised to improve last-mile connectivity. It will allow pedestrians to bypass heavily congested inner-city roads, offering a more seamless and efficient route to the Pune Metro network.

Construction on the project began in March 2022 and has now reached its final stages. The remaining work includes painting and other minor finishing touches. Once completed, the project will be submitted for final inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), after which the bridge will be inaugurated and opened for public use.

Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Pune Metro, shared that the construction work is practically complete, and the team is focusing on final detailing. After the CMRS inspection, the formal opening will follow in August.
