Pune Metro, considered as the city’s future transport lifeline, has come under scrutiny after shocking incidents of water leakage were reported inside its underground section following heavy pre-monsoon rainfall in the city.
On Friday evening, Pune witnessed heavy rain for nearly three to four hours, leading to waterlogging and disruption in several areas. Amid the downpour, videos showing water leaking inside Pune Metro stations surfaced on social media and quickly went viral.
The leakage was reportedly seen at an underground station on the Shivajinagar to Vanaz route, where water could be seen flowing from the ceiling and walls.
Passengers present at the station expressed concern over the situation, while several citizens questioned the safety and construction quality of the metro infrastructure.
Many commuters demanded immediate repairs and proper inspection of the affected areas. The incident has sparked criticism as Pune Metro is a high-budget infrastructure project developed through the efforts of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited and other planning authorities.
Citizens also raised concerns over how such leakage occurred during the very first major spell of rain, despite thousands of crores being invested in the project. Questions are now being asked about the durability and long-term safety of the underground metro system.
Pune Metro was expected to transform the city’s public transport network and reduce traffic congestion. However, the recent leakage incident has created anxiety among regular commuters and triggered fresh debate over the quality of execution of major infrastructure projects in the city.
