Pune, 10 July 2025: After a brief lull, monsoon showers made a strong comeback in Pune on Wednesday, bringing relief from the dry spell but causing significant disruptions across the city. Starting in the afternoon, heavy rain lashed both central areas and the suburbs, catching residents off guard and throwing traffic out of gear. The rain continued well into the night, leading to waterlogging on several roads and traffic snarls across key routes.
While Shivajinagar recorded 6 mm and Pashan 5 mm of rainfall by 6 PM, other parts of the city experienced even more intense showers. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy over the next week, with light to moderate rainfall likely to continue in and around Pune.
Rainfall during June had remained moderate, and the first week of July saw little to no rain. The weather had turned dry and warm over the past two days, with rising daytime temperatures and overcast skies but no showers. However, on Wednesday, the weather changed dramatically. By around 4 PM, dark clouds gathered over the city, followed by a steady downpour that lasted for two to two and a half hours, with light shower continuing later.
The sudden rain caused major inconvenience, especially for students and office-goers. As the showers coincided with the time schools, colleges, and offices were closing, many were left stranded in the downpour. Heavy traffic congestion on both major and internal roads added to the chaos, making it a tough evening for commuters. Traffic police struggled to manage the increased pressure.
Localities such as Swargate, Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Yerawada, Vishrantwadi, Kharadi, Aundh, NDA, Kothrud, Warje, Thergaon, Katraj, Ambegaon, Kondhwa, Mundhwa, and Dhankawadi all reported light to moderate rainfall during the afternoon hours. In hilly areas, particularly in the Mulshi region, Girivan received the highest rainfall with 37 mm. Some areas also experienced isolated heavy to very heavy downpours.
With more cloudy skies and rain expected over the next four to five days, Pune residents are advised to prepare for continuing disruptions, while also welcoming the much-needed monsoon relief.
