Pune, 16 March 2026: The Pune civic body has directed all civic departments and agencies to complete road excavation works across the city by April 30, as part of its pre-monsoon preparations.
The Road Department plans to begin road repair and maintenance work from May 1 to ensure better road conditions before the monsoon arrives.
Officials said departments such as water supply, drainage and electricity have been asked to finish all necessary digging work within the next one-and-a-half months.
After April 30, permission for road excavation will be granted only in emergency situations. The directive was issued during a recent review meeting of the civic administration.
Roads in Pune are frequently dug up for laying or repairing water pipelines, drainage lines and stormwater drains. Apart from PMC departments, agencies such as the police administration, Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and private telecom companies also carry out excavation work after obtaining permission from the civic body.
While the PMC collects the required fees for such works, the Road Department is responsible for restoring the roads after excavation.
As part of the annual pre-monsoon preparations, the Road Department carries out repair work from May 1 until the start of the monsoon. To ensure smooth repairs, the civic body has warned that no department or agency will be allowed to dig roads for laying service lines between May 1 and September 30. Strict action will be taken if excavation is carried out during this period without permission.
A similar deadline was set last year, with the administration initially asking departments to complete excavation work by April 30 and begin repairs from May 1. However, the deadline was later extended to May 15 due to urgent works.
Last year, pre-monsoon showers began in Pune on May 8, forcing the civic body to carry out repair work during the rainy season. Despite that experience, the administration has once again fixed April 30 as the deadline this year. If the monsoon arrives early, there is a possibility that some damaged roads may remain unrepaired.
