Pune, 1st May 2026: In his Maharashtra day speech CM Devendra Fadnavis announces that the Mumbai-Pune missing link that will cut travel time by 30 minutes and distance by 6 km is open to the public. So let's understand the necessity and importance of this project.
When CM Devendra Fadnavis announced the opening of the Missing Link, it solved a major problem faced by daily travellers.
The ghat section between Khandala and Khopoli has always been the slowest part of the journey. Heavy trucks, sharp turns, and steep slopes often cause traffic jams. Even a small breakdown can lead to long delays.
The Missing Link, as the project has been officially, almost poetically, named, is a 13.3-kilometre corridor developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that connects Khopoli on the Mumbai side directly to Kusgaon near Lonavala, bypassing the ghat section entirely.
Built by Afcons Infrastructure at a cost of ₹6,695 crore over more than a decade, it cuts travel distance by 6 kilometres and journey time by up to 30 minutes. No additional toll will be charged.
Since vehicles avoid steep slopes and sharp curves, traffic moves more steadily. There is less braking, fewer sudden slowdowns, and reduced chances of traffic jams.
For regular commuters and transport vehicles, this means more predictable travel time, less fuel usage, and reduced stress while driving.
A major highlight of the project is its long tunnel under Lonavala. This tunnel is about 8.9 km long and very wide, making it one of the widest road tunnels in the world. It is equipped with modern safety systems.
If there is a fire, sensors quickly detect heat and a water spray system starts automatically. Air inside the tunnel is also constantly checked, and large fans control ventilation to keep it safe. Everything is monitored from a central control system, ensuring quick action in case of any issue.
The Missing Link is more than just a shortcut. It shows how road infrastructure is improving with better planning and technology. As traffic between Pune and Mumbai keeps increasing, such projects will help reduce congestion and make travel faster and safer.
