Pune, 27th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has warned government and semi-government employees of strict action, including criminal cases, for failing to participate in the ongoing census work. The civic administration is under pressure to complete the survey process by June 14.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram chaired a review meeting with deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners from all 15 ward offices to assess the progress of the census operation.
During the meeting, the commissioner expressed serious concern over the slow pace of work in several parts of the city.
Officials informed the commissioner that door-to-door data collection has started in nearly 60% of the census enumeration groups in Pune. However, work in the remaining 40% is either delayed or yet to begin. The Nagar Road, Yerawada-Wagholi, Dhole Patil Road, Aundh-Baner, and Sinhagad Road ward offices have reported less than 50% completion so far.
Taking strong note of the delay, Commissioner Ram directed officials to issue show-cause notices to the assistant commissioners of the concerned ward offices. He also instructed the administration to ensure that work in all 11,000 census groups becomes fully operational through the online application within the next two days. The progress of the work will now be reviewed daily.
The civic body also observed that several employees assigned to census duty have not reported for work despite receiving official orders. Authorities have been instructed to immediately contact such employees and ensure they join duty without further delay.
PMC officials warned that employees who continue to remain absent will be treated as having neglected a national responsibility under the Census Act, and direct criminal cases may be registered against them.
Department heads have also been asked to initiate suspension proceedings against employees refusing to cooperate with the census work.
The administration has further directed government offices that have not yet relieved their employees for census duty to do so immediately to avoid delays in the survey process.
The census is a matter of national importance and top priority. Any delay, negligence, or lack of seriousness in carrying out the responsibility will not be tolerated. Every officer and employee must complete their assigned duties on time, failing which strict action will be taken.
