Pune, 15 January 2026: With the Pune Municipal Corporation elections today, city police have rolled out one of the largest security deployments in recent years.

Around 14,000 police personnel, along with 3,250 home guards and four companies of the State Reserve Police Force, have been deployed to ensure a peaceful, fearless and transparent voting process.

Under the supervision of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Joint Commissioner Ranjankumar Sharma, Pune has been divided into 88 security zones. More than 100 sensitive locations have been identified and placed under special watch to prevent any disturbances on polling day.

Since the Model Code of Conduct came into force, police have taken preventive action against 3,439 people. Surveillance teams have been working across the city, leading to the seizure of ₹67 lakh in unaccounted cash meant to influence voters.

In a major crackdown on illegal activities, police have registered 179 cases under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act and seized liquor and related material worth ₹1.24 crore. Drug enforcement teams have also recovered MD, cannabis, narcotic tablets worth nearly ₹27 lakh. Preventive action has been taken against 49 habitual offenders under special laws.

To avoid misuse of weapons, over 3,200 licensed firearms have been deposited with the police, while illegal pistols, cartridges and sharp weapons have also been seized. Authorities have served non-bailable warrants to 313 accused persons.

Police have registered 17 cases related to violations of the election code, including distribution of cash and gifts. Despite these attempts to influence voters, officials said no incidents of election-related violence have been reported so far. Citizens have been urged to vote without fear and help maintain law and order.
