

Pune, 17th September 2026: A 46-year-old security personnel posted at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla died at a military hospital on Wednesday, five days after sustaining a gunshot injury. Police said the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.
The incident took place on September 11 inside a guard room on the NDA campus. The deceased, identified as RK Singh, was attached to the Defence Security Corps and was on duty when he suffered the gunshot injury.
Police said another sentry stationed at a nearby tower heard the sound of gunfire. He went to the guard room and found Singh injured before alerting the NDA control room.
Singh was immediately taken to Command Hospital in Wanowrie for treatment. Police said the bullet entered through his neck and exited from the rear side. Despite treatment, he died on Wednesday.
A senior police official said it was too early to determine whether the shooting was accidental or self-inflicted. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading to the incident.
The official said the investigation is ongoing and that no conclusion has been reached regarding the cause of the shooting.
Singh's post-mortem examination was conducted at Sassoon Hospital. His body was later handed over to his relatives.
Police have registered an accidental death report in connection with the incident. The investigation will determine how the gunshot occurred.
