Pune: A Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus running on CNG fuel caught fire on the Nagar road Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route after a speeding bike rammed into it on Monday morning around 10 am. The biker, injured in the accident, succumbed to the injuries on the spot.

The deceased man has been identified as Ajinkya Yeole (25). Vimantal police are registering a FIR in this regard. A major tragedy was averted due to the presence of mind shown by the bus driver and conductor who stopped the bus immediately and asked the passengers to get off the bus.

The PMPML bus was coming from Warje Malwadi and headed towards Wagholi on Nagar road. The biker had wrongly entered the BRT route and was trying to overtake the bus. When the bus came near Kharadi bypass junction, the biker lost control over his vehicle and rammed into the rear side of the bus.

The bike and the youth got stuck beneath the bus and after a few moments smoke started coming out of the bus. The bus caught fire within a few seconds. The bus driver and conductor noticed the fire and immediately stopped the bus. They requested and facilitated the deboarding of passengers in the bus.

The fire brigade department was informed about the incident. The fire personnel rushed to the spot and doused the fire within a few minutes. Meanwhile, a team of police personnel from the Vimantal police station had reached the spot. They rescued the biker from under the bus and rushed him to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival at the hospital.
