Pune police to start counselling citizens as suicides surge

Pune: Pune police, frontline warriors of coronavirus will now turn into counselling and training to interact with depressed people to avoid taking a grave step of suicide.

Pune police will conduct survey, training, communication and will assign counselling sessions.

Over 10 people have committed suicide in Pune from last one week. In one of the four incidences that has been registered with Pune Police is where the family committed suicide. The incident was one of the shocking incidents in the city.

Compared to March (64) and May (50) of March last year, the number of suicides has decreased till March (45), April (28) and May 20 (18) of this year. The events continued to unfold. A few days ago, a police officer also committed suicide due to family reasons.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bachchan Singh, said, "The number of suicide as compared to last year is less. The reasons for suicide vary from loneliness, depression, financial penury, loss of a job, problems in relationship and more but there is no particular trend for suicides as it depends upon the temperament of a person. Prima facie, proximity to the family members gives people morale support and helps to fight suicidal tendencies."

The Pune city Commissioner of Police Dr K Venkatesham raised this issue in the weekly meeting of senior police inspectors of all police stations.

Dr Venkatesham said, "We would take steps to prevent such incidents. The police station will take serious note of the incident. The police will interact with the citizens as well as will provide counselling to them.”

Speaking to Sakal Times Dr Venkatesham said, "We appeal people to dial 100 and approach police in order to share their thoughts and problems. We have also plan to start Special Counselling lessons for our police officials deployed. Beat marshals are the one who reaches the spot first whenever the person reaches to us. Thus, the counselling lessons will be taught to marshals first.”

He added, "We have focused on surveys, communication, counselling and prompt response. The survey will be conducted by SNDT for the same.”
