Pune, 8th October 2026: A 55-year-old Police Sub-Inspector posted with the Pune Police died by suicide at his residence in Aundh on Wednesday afternoon. The officer, identified as Nilesh Bhausaheb Patil, reportedly used his government-issued service pistol.

Patil was posted at Vishrantwadi Police Station and had been promoted to the rank of Police Sub-Inspector after joining the Pune Police force. He was scheduled to travel to Mumbai on Wednesday for work related to the High Court but did not make the trip.

Patil lived with his family in a housing society on Nagras Road in Aundh. At around 3.30 pm, he was at home with his son when the incident occurred. After hearing the gunshot, his son came out and found him injured.

Patil was immediately taken to a private hospital, but doctors declared him dead before treatment could begin.

Police said Patil had been facing health-related problems and had taken leave for one to two months before the Ganesh festival. He later returned to duty for Ganeshotsav security arrangements.

According to police, Patil had reportedly been depressed in recent days after experiencing health problems. However, the exact reason for his decision remains unknown.

Senior Police Inspector Uttam Bhajanawale of Chaturshringi Police Station said the police are investigating various aspects of the case to determine the reason behind the death.

Patil is survived by his wife and son. He had previously lived in the Khadak police residential quarters. His death has led to grief among colleagues in the Pune Police Department.
