Pune, 2nd July 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has temporarily changed the timings of primary schools across the city from July 1 to August 31, 2026, as teachers have been assigned duties for the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The revised schedule will apply to both PMC-run and private primary schools.
According to a circular issued by the PMC Primary Education Department, schools will now operate from 7 am to 12.15 pm during the two-month period. The civic body said the decision has been taken to ensure that students' education continues smoothly while teachers remain available for election-related work.
PMC officials clarified that the change in school timings is purely a temporary measure linked to the ongoing voter list revision exercise. Unlike last year, when school timings were modified to provide younger students with a more comfortable morning routine, this year's revision has been made solely because of teachers' election responsibilities.
Administrative Officer of the Primary Education Department Sunanda Wakhare and Deputy Municipal Commissioner Vasundhara Barve have directed the heads of all PMC and private primary schools to immediately inform parents about the revised schedule.
Schools have also been instructed to ensure that students and parents do not face any inconvenience because of the temporary change.
The Election Commission of India has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 16 states and three Union Territories, including Maharashtra, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
As part of the exercise, teachers have been appointed as Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to help update voter lists. PMC officials said the revised school timings are intended to maintain regular academic activities while allowing teachers to fulfil their election duties.
