
Pune, 26 June 2025: In a strong response to the early bird discount scheme, citizens in Pune have prioritized paying their property tax within the first two months of the financial year. As a result, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has collected a remarkable ₹938.36 crore so far.
This annual discount scheme, offering 5 to 10 percent relief on general tax amounts, has consistently seen good participation from regular taxpayers. This year too, the trend continues, with over 5,80,475 property owners making timely payments to avail of the benefit. The deadline to claim this discount is just five days away, and PMC officials are urging more citizens to take advantage of the scheme before it ends.
Property tax is PMC’s second-highest revenue generator after the Building Department. For the current financial year, the target for property tax collection is set at ₹3,250 crore. With a strong start already underway, the civic body is optimistic about reaching this ambitious goal.
However, while early payments have helped fill the coffers, a massive backlog still looms. Around ₹17,000 crore in property tax dues remain pending. Among these, mobile tower companies alone account for nearly ₹4,000 crore in arrears.
An equivalent amount is also pending from cases involving duplicate property taxes. Tax disputes under litigation contribute another ₹1,500 crore, while properties from newly merged villages owe close to ₹1,900 crore.
Officials from PMC’s Property Tax and Assessment Department are expected to shift focus to recovery of these pending dues from June onwards. Each year, efforts are made to recover substantial arrears, and the department is likely to intensify this drive after the initial discount period ends.

Online payments: 4,03,210
Cash payments: 1,14,002
Cheque and Demand Draft (DD) payments: 63,263
With the early response proving encouraging, PMC hopes more citizens will continue to pay on time, helping improve civic infrastructure and services across the city.
