Pune Civic Body Plans 8–10% Property Tax Hike Ahead of 2026–27 Budget

Final decision to be taken by new Standing Committee as municipal corporation looks to boost tax revenue

Pune, 28 January 2026: As preparations for the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) 2026–27 budget gather pace, the civic administration is planning to propose an 8 to 10 per cent increase in property tax to enhance revenue. The proposal is expected to be tabled before the Standing Committee in the coming weeks.

According to officials, the PMC’s Property Tax Department has prepared the proposal citing the need for additional income. The last property tax hike was implemented in 2016, when rates were increased by 11 per cent. Since there has been no revision in the past decade, the administration believes a tax increase is necessary.

As per rules, any decision on tax revision must be taken before February 20. In line with this, the administration will place the proposal before the Standing Committee. The election of the Mayor is scheduled for the second week of February, followed by the selection of the Standing Committee chairperson. The newly appointed committee leadership will then decide whether to approve the tax hike.

While concerns remain that a tax increase could burden citizens, political observers note that with no elections scheduled until 2029, the ruling party may be more willing to take a bold decision. However, it remains to be seen whether the new Standing Committee will approve the property tax hike or suggest alternative measures to increase municipal revenue.
