Pune, 9th March 2026: Railway passengers will soon be able to access affordable and comfortable resting facilities at Pune Railway Station with the introduction of modern sleeping pods. The pods are being installed as part of an executive lounge being developed near the reservation center area of the station.
According to railway officials, the project has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹36 lakh and will be the first time such a facility is introduced at Pune station. A total of 24 sleeping pods have been prepared and are expected to be made available to passengers in the coming days.
Passengers often need to wait for long hours for connecting trains or may require a short rest after arriving at the station. However, booking hotel rooms for a few hours is often inconvenient or expensive for many travellers. The new sleeping pods aim to provide a comfortable and economical resting option directly within the railway premises.
The pods are designed on the concept of Japanese capsule hotels, where travellers rent a compact air-conditioned capsule bed instead of an entire room. The facility will operate on an hourly rental basis, allowing passengers to pay only for the duration of their stay.
Each pod will include several modern amenities such as individual air-conditioning control, high-speed internet, mobile charging points and reading lights. Security measures like personal lockers and CCTV monitoring have also been installed.
Some premium pods will feature small television screens, and a separate section has been created exclusively for women travellers.
Hemantkumar Behra, Public Relations Officer of the Railway Department in Pune, said, "Sleeping pods will provide a convenient and affordable option for passengers who need rest during travel but cannot opt for hotel stays for short durations. The facility will soon be made available to passengers at Pune Railway Station."
