Pune, 15th June 2026: With 0 mm rainfall in the first half, the city has witnessed an unusually dry start to June. According to available records, this is the first time since at least 2014 that the city has remained completely rainless from June 1 to June 15.
The southwest monsoon, which usually reaches Pune by around June 10, has yet to arrive this year. While some pre-monsoon showers brought temporary relief to parts of the region, they were insufficient to make up for the prolonged dry spell.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the monsoon's advance over Maharashtra has temporarily slowed, making the exact onset date uncertain.
Meteorologists expect light rainfall activity to begin around June 18. However, the forecast is not considered significant enough to substantially improve rainfall conditions in the region.
In previous years, delayed monsoon arrivals were often offset by pre-monsoon showers, but that has not been the case this year.
The continuing dry weather, coupled with forecasts of below-average rainfall influenced by El Niño conditions, has increased anxiety among farmers who depend on timely monsoon rains for agricultural activities.
Pune's monsoon arrival dates have varied considerably in recent years. The monsoon reached the city on May 26 in 2025, June 6 in 2024, June 24 in 2023, June 10 in 2022, June 9 in 2021, June 11 in 2020, June 20 in 2019, June 8 in 2018, and June 10 in 2017.
