Pune this year continues to endure an unusually cold spell, with the day after Christmas bringing another record-breaking chill. On December 26, the Shivajinagar station recorded a minimum temperature of 9.9°C, marking the 18th consecutive day of temperatures dropping below the 10°C mark in the city.
Pune is currently experiencing its coldest period of the season, with daytime temperatures hovering around 27.5°C, the lowest since December 24. This extended cold spell mirrors the city's chilliest mornings of 2013, when temperatures remained below 10°C for 16 consecutive days. The last time temperatures stayed in the single digits for a prolonged stretch was in 2018, with a cold snap lasting eight days.
Even though the cold of winter began to take hold in November, with the minimum temperature plummeting from 14.4 degrees Celsius on November 29 to 9.8 degrees on November 30, the first week of December 2025 experienced fluctuating temperatures each morning.
The temperature exceeded 11 degrees on November 2 and 3, rose to 12.9 degrees within a day, and continued to climb, reaching a mild 14.9 degrees Celsius on November 5 and 14.1 degrees on December 6. By December 7, the temperature started to decrease, registering at 12.9 degrees.
The current cold spell is due to northerly winds introducing chill into the area. Additionally, low atmospheric humidity and a clear, cloudless sky, which enable the day's warmth to dissipate quickly and cool the Earth's surface, are other factors causing the current temperature drop.
