Pune, 23rd September 2026: A 45-year-old worker who was seriously injured while demolishing an old water tank on the premises of B J Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital died during treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Suresh Shankar Shinde, a resident of Malshiras in Solapur district. He was injured after a portion of the water tank collapsed on him while demolition work was underway around 1:30 am on September 16.
According to police, a contractor had undertaken the demolition of an old water tank used for a hostel on the hospital premises. During the work, a section of the structure collapsed, trapping Shinde under the debris.
Fire brigade personnel reached the spot and carried out a rescue operation. Shinde was pulled out from the debris and shifted to a hospital for treatment. However, doctors later declared him dead during treatment.
A complaint was filed at Bundgarden Police Station by Vasant Shinde. Police have booked the contractor, alleging that adequate safety measures and protective equipment were not provided to the workers during the demolition work.
