Pune, 10th October 2026: Cyber fraudsters have come up with another tactic to cheat citizens, using voter list correction as a pretext. A 77-year-old senior citizen from Balewadi allegedly lost ₹5 lakh after fraudsters contacted him while posing as officials from the Election Commission. Baner Police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
According to the complaint, the fraudsters contacted the senior citizen on his mobile phone on October 6. Claiming to be Election Commission officials, they told him that a correction was required in the voter list and asked him to transfer ₹5 online.
The victim made the payment as instructed. However, the fraudsters allegedly gained access to confidential information related to his bank account and online banking services.
The accused allegedly misused the banking information to withdraw ₹5 lakh from the victim's account. Following the incident, a case was registered at Baner Police Station, and the matter is under investigation.
The incident highlights how cybercriminals exploit routine services, such as voter list corrections, to deceive citizens. People should remain cautious of unsolicited calls claiming to be from government departments and avoid sharing banking credentials or following payment instructions from unknown callers.
