Pune: SP College Lady Ramabai Hall renovation work completed; auditorium opens up today

Pune: The Lady Ramabai Hall in Sir Parshurambhau (SP) College has been renovated and the auditorium will be opened up from Saturday (November 28). The Lady Ramabai Hall has a historical significance as it has witnessed the presence and speeches of eminent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhashchandra Bose, Swatantraveer Vinayak Savarkar, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and others.

The auditorium has been renovated with a combination of old and new architecture based structural changes. Now the auditorium has been made air conditioned, acoustic with a seating capacity of 292 persons.

Jayant Kirad, Member of the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali said, "The auditorium has a long legacy with several prominent leaders from socio-economic-political sectors delivering their speeches at this place. We decided to renovate the auditorium in order to provide for all modern facilities."

"Since the place is of historical significance, we took necessary permissions from all the concerned government departments. The outside structure has been maintained while new technology-based changes have been made internally. A generator back up and fire protection system with 80 thousand litres capacity water tank has now been provided for the auditorium," he added.

Advocate S K Jain, Chairman of the Managing Council of Shikshan Prasarak Mandali said, "Bharat Shah and family have contributed largely for the makeover of this historical place. Now this auditorium is equipped with all modern facilities and it can now be further used for education programs, students training programs, lectures of entrepreneurs and important social initiatives."

The construction of this historical auditorium was started on December 10, 1932 at the hands of Shrimant Babasaheb Pant of the Bhor Sansthan. The auditorium was inaugurated on June 13, 1933 at the hands of R P Masani. The auditorium was earlier called the assembly hall. The Queen of Jamkhandi Lady Ramabai Patwardhan had then donated Rs 12500 for the auditorium and hence it was renamed as the Lady Ramabai (Devi Ramabai) Hall.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, C V Raman, Sir Visvesvaraya, Morarji Desai, Dr R G Bhandarkar, Vinoba Bhave, Annie Besant, Maulana Azad, Dhondo Keshav Karve, C D Deshmukh, Datto Waman Potdar, Shrimant Sir Parshurambhau Patwardhan, Wrangler R P Paranjape, Dhananjayrao Gadgil, Achyutrao Patwardhan, General Cariappa, Dr Sarojini Naidu, Dr Kurtkoti Shankaracharya, Barister Jaykar, Sonopant Dandekar and other dignitaries have visited this auditorium.
