Pune, 24 February 2026: Traders at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Market Yard in Gultekdi have announced a one-day bandh on February 25, citing a sharp rise in theft cases and severe traffic congestion within the premises.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Poona Merchants' Chamber, which represents over 600 traders operating in the Market Yard. Members expressed concern over repeated thefts, especially in the grocery wholesale section near the fruit and vegetable market, leading to financial losses and fear among traders.
Rajendra Bathiya, president of the Poona Merchants’ Chamber, said, “There has been a steady increase in theft cases over the past six months. Despite repeated complaints to the market committee and the police, no concrete action has been taken. Traders feel unsafe and helpless.”
In addition to security concerns, traders highlighted worsening traffic conditions inside the yard. Heavy trucks and tempos are allegedly parked without proper regulation, blocking internal roads and delaying loading and unloading operations.
According to traders, the mismanagement has disrupted daily business and affected supply chains at one of the region’s largest wholesale markets.
“The traffic situation has become unmanageable. Unauthorized parking and lack of monitoring are causing daily chaos. Our business operations are suffering because of this,” Bathiya added.
Traders say the February 25 shutdown is a protest aimed at pressuring authorities to strengthen security arrangements, regulate vehicle movement, and restore order within the Market Yard.
