Citizens can submit photos of violations like triple riding, helmetless riding, wrong-side driving, and illegal parking.
The system will verify reports and issue fines automatically, with full launch expected in three months.
Pune, 3rd October 2025: The Pune Traffic Police are preparing to introduce an AI-driven WhatsApp chatbot aimed at reducing traffic violations and speeding up the issuance of e-challans. This system will enable citizens to report drivers who break the rules, facilitating faster and more effective enforcement.
The project seeks to tackle prevalent traffic issues in Pune, including driving on the wrong side, riding with three people on a bike, speeding, running red lights, illegal parking, and not wearing helmets. Previously, officers had to manually input vehicle numbers into e-challan devices, take photographs, and handle fines, which was a lengthy procedure.
Himmat Jadhav, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Traffic Branch, stated that the new chatbot enables citizens to upload photos of traffic violations, which will be analysed and verified by AI. Upon confirmation, fines will be directly issued to the driver's name.
Jadhav mentioned, 'Previously, we relied on apps and AI-powered CCTV cameras for surveillance. This chatbot represents a major advancement, empowering citizens to actively engage in enforcing traffic regulations.'
The details provided via the chatbot will undergo verification for accuracy, and penalties will be imposed only if the information is at least 80% accurate. Engineering specialists are contributing to the system's development. The first trial took place on October 1, and the team is addressing any errors or problems. The Pune Traffic Police plan to completely roll out the chatbot within the next three months.
This initiative demonstrates the Pune Traffic Police's commitment to leveraging technology and involving citizens to decrease traffic infractions and enhance road safety.
