Pune University to consider only second, third-year marks for final-year students assessment

Pune University to consider only second, third-year marks for final-year students assessment
Published on

Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will assess the performance of students based only on the marks obtained in the second and third year of non-professional courses. The first-year marks will not be considered, as they are given by the college and not informed to the university.

About 346 colleges of art, commerce and science are affiliated to the SPPU, and about 3.5 lakh students are enrolled for these courses. The state government has decided to cancel the first and second year exam for these courses, while the third year exams are kept optional for students to decide. For students who won't appear for the examination, the university will assess their performance based on the average of second and third-year marks obtained by the student.

Since the number of students enrolling for these courses is large, the exams, paper checking and result declaration work have created a huge burden on the university system. Hence, it was decided that for the first year exams, the colleges themselves will assess the students, and they were not required to send the marks of the students to the university.

Thus, only second year and third-year marks of students are available on record with the university.

Pattern change since 2019
The university has adopted a credit system for the traditional courses from the academic year of 2019. Semester pattern was also introduced at the same time for these courses. Considering this year-old change, the university will face a tough challenge while assessing students for their second and third-year marks, which were given under different systems.

Mahesh Kakade, Director of Board of Examinations & Evaluation of SPPU, said, "The marks obtained in the first year examinations won't be considered while assessing students in the final year of BA, B.Com and BSc courses. The second and third-year marks will be considered, and the results will be declared accordingly. University has issued an order regarding this before, and it will be implemented."
