Pune University to print students photo on mark sheets starting October this year

Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University has decided to print photos of students on the mark sheets to curb several malpractices. It is a bold step in terms of reforming the examination department.

After the final year examination in the month of October, photos of students are likely to be printed on the marksheets of some selected courses on an experimental basis. After examinations in March 2021, all students will be able to get such mark sheets with photos.

Pune University jurisdiction is spread over three districts namely Pune, Nagar and Nashik. About seven lakh students are studying in more than 1000 colleges affiliated to Pune University. Most of the courses in Pune University are semester based. Therefore, examinations are conducted twice a year. The process of planning these exams, scheduling, collating marks from the college according to the credit system and then announcing the results of the students is an ongoing process.

The SPPU Edutech Foundation of Pune University has developed 'Degree Data Processing and Printing' software for printing of degree certificates for the examination department. Laser printers have been used instead of dot matrix printers. It takes about 65 prints per minute. Using this software, it is possible to print photos of students on the marksheets. Determining the location of the photo on the mark sheet will be done with the approval of the Management Council.

Dr Mahesh Kakade, Director of Board of Examinations and Evaluation of SPPU said, “With the adoption of new technology by the examination department, it is possible to print photos on the mark sheet. A proposal will be submitted soon for approval by the Management Council. Students will be satisfied with the printing of your photo mark sheet and this will be an important step in terms of safety.”

UGC had in 2011 directed to make amendments, stating that the photo of the students should be printed along with marks. Kolhapur University had started printing students’ photos on their mark sheet since 2014.

BENEFITS

  • Confusion due to similarity of names can be avoided
  • Student will be sure that the mark sheet is theirs
  • Implementation of UGC safety standards

Tampering with marks, duplication will be avoided
