Pune, 11 September 2025: In a proud milestone of urban development, Pune has emerged as the fastest-expanding urban area in India, with its developed region growing by a staggering 332% over the past 30 years.
A recent report by real estate platform Square Yards, titled "Cities in Motion – Tracing 30 Years of Urban Expansion in Key Indian Cities," reveals that Pune's urban footprint has increased from just 86 sq. km. in 1995 to 373 sq. km. in 2025, an addition of 287 sq. km. This growth is credited to the city’s evolution from a manufacturing stronghold to a thriving hub for IT and start-ups on the global stage.
The study, which utilized satellite imagery and geospatial technology to observe the eight largest cities in India, indicates that the country's urban area has expanded twofold since 1995, adding 2,136 square kilometers of developed land. Presently, these cities together cover 4,308 square kilometers of urban space, influencing skylines and development patterns across the nation.
Although Pune was at the forefront in percentage growth, here's how other major cities performed:
Delhi NCR: Delhi experienced the most significant increase in urban space, growing by 400 square kilometers to achieve a total area of 967 square kilometers. This growth highlights the region's development as a multi-centered hub, facilitated by industrial corridors, expressways, and metro links throughout Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.
Mumbai: Despite being the most populous region in the country, Mumbai MMR saw the lowest growth at 43% due to its vertical development approach and limited space.
Bengaluru: Bengaluru expanded its area by 186%, adding 324 square kilometers, driven by the tech industry and metro development.
Kolkata: Kolkata increased by 283 square kilometers (87%), aided by IT parks, planned townships, and infrastructure improvements.
Chennai: Chennai experienced a 137% increase, propelled by the IT, automotive, and medical industries.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad expanded by 252 square kilometers, almost doubling its urban area with government-supported IT and pharmaceutical growth.
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad grew by 102%, fueled by GIFT City and a diverse economy.
