Pune, 15th July 2026: The Pune Civic Body has cancelled its decision to resume alternate-day water supply from July 15, offering relief to Punekars just a day after the plan was announced. The decision was reversed following a review of the improved water situation in the Khadakwasla dam system.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram had earlier announced that water cuts would return from July 15 as a precautionary measure, despite recent rainfall. However, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure intervened, stating that with adequate water available and canal releases from Khadakwasla underway, imposing restrictions on citizens at this stage was unnecessary.
The decision was taken after a meeting chaired by Mayor Nagpure with Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale, Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur and Water Supply Department head Nandakishor Jagtap. Officials reviewed the latest reservoir levels and rainfall outlook before concluding that daily water supply should continue.
Nagpure also discussed the matter with Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram over the phone before the administration officially withdrew the proposed water cuts.
PMC had introduced alternate-day water supply on June 15 after the Khadakwasla reservoir system reached critically low levels due to a delayed monsoon. The restrictions were temporarily suspended until July 12 during the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi processions.
Heavy rainfall in the dam catchment areas over the past week has significantly improved water availability, with storage in the Khadakwasla dam system increasing from around 12% to nearly 58%. While the reservoirs are yet to reach full capacity, civic officials believe the present situation does not warrant immediate water restrictions.
The PMC will reassess the city's water supply after July 22 by considering the India Meteorological Department's rainfall forecast and the water available in the Khadakwasla reservoir system. A meeting of leaders from all political parties will be held before taking any further decision on water supply regulations.
"There is no need for water cuts in city at present. The administration has been instructed to continue regular daily water supply to residents. Based on the India Meteorological Department's rainfall forecast and the water storage in the Khadakwasla dam system, an all-party meeting will be held after July 22 to decide whether any future restrictions are necessary," said Mayor Manjusha Nagpure.
