Pune, 21st May 2026: Punekars finally received some relief from the scorching summer heat during the second half of May as temperatures across the city witnessed a noticeable decline.
The maximum daytime temperature, which had crossed 40°C just a few days ago, dropped to 36.3°C on May 20.
The weather became less harsh not only during the day but also at night. The minimum temperature fell to around 24°C, making nights comparatively cooler and more comfortable.
Light rain was also reported in parts of East Pune, further improving weather conditions. The sudden change comes even as several regions in North India continue to face intense heatwave conditions.
According to weather experts, the drop in temperature is mainly due to moisture incursion and pre-monsoon weather activity. Pune’s location on the leeward side of the Western Ghats allows moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal to interact with strong daytime heating, leading to cloud formation, thunderstorms and sudden showers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain and lightning in Pune from May 22 to May 27. Rainfall activity during this period is expected to keep temperatures under control and provide continued relief from the summer heat.
