Pune: Woman loses eye while fighting off attacker; alleged molester still on the run

Pune: After 48 hours, the Pune rural police has failed to arrest the main accused in the attack on a woman based in Shirur tehsil who lost her eyes on Wednesday.

In a heinous incident, a 37-year-old-woman on Wednesday lost her eyes in an attack by an unidentified man who allegedly tried an attempt of molestation with her.

The police said that the incident took place in Shirur taluka of Pune district, around 65 km from Pune when the woman stepped out of her house to attend nature’s call. An unidentified man attacked her and tried molesting her. During the scuffle, the accused injured the eyes of the victim. While in deep pain, she shouted for help when villagers and her husband rushed to the spot. However, the attacker fled from the scene. The woman was rushed to Sassoon hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

ANI quoted, Abhinav Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police (SP), Pune Rural, as saying, "A woman was attacked by an unknown person in Nhavare village of Shirur tehsil in Pune when she had gone out of her house on Tuesday night. The woman is critically injured and has been admitted to Sassoon Hospital Pune. We visited the spot and we are taking further details. Police are investigating the case and soon will find the accused."

On Wednesday, senior police officials including Pune (rural) Superintendent of Police Dr Abhinav Deshmukh, Additional SP Milind Mohite, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rahul Dhas and other officers visited the spot. 48 hours after the attack, police are yet to arrest the attacker.
