Pune: YCM Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad to get additional police security cover

Pune: Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Shravan Hardikar has assured doctors at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) hospital that additional police security will be provided to them. Hardikar has also directed the hospital administration to file a complaint against the BJP corporator who had allegedly manhandled the doctors in YCM hospital.

YCM is the biggest hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad with a 750-bed capacity and PCMC has converted it to a dedicated COVID hospital. Only critical patients or those with severe symptoms are admitted to the hospital. Rest of the patients are admitted in the COVID Care Centre. Doctors at YCM hospital had protested on Monday morning alleging mistreatment by BJP corporator Sandeep Waghere on Sunday night. Waghere had entered into an argument with the doctors over the admission of a female patient who had reportedly died on Sunday night, but the doctors asked her relatives to shift her to the Intensive Care Unit.

Waghere had alleged that the doctors were trying to hide their failure in saving the life of the woman who was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 disease. Doctors refuted these charges and then a verbal spat ensued between Waghere and them.

Corporator Sandeep Waghere, however, had denied all allegations. He said, “I haven’t beaten up anyone. I understand that they are doctors but they were shifting a dead woman to the Intensive Care Unit. We had a squabble over this issue but I have not beaten anyone. The doctors are lying.”

Doctors had taken a stand that they won’t resume duties till they are granted protection. PCMC Commissioner Hardikar met the protesting doctors on Monday evening. After Hardikar’s assurance of taking appropriate action doctors agreed to resume their duties.

Hardikar said, “I have discussed all issues and difficulties faced by the doctors and medical staff at YCM hospital. They had demanded additional police security at the hospital. We will ask Pimpri Chinchwad police to deploy additional manpower at the hospital. We have also instructed the administration to file a complaint against the concerned persons who have manhandled doctors.”
