Pune: The Navale Bridge area in the city has been reporting a rise in road accidents for the past few days. Now, the district administration has taken steps to prevent further mishaps at the accident hotspot’.

Pune District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh has asked the authorities to complete the measures by March 31.

On Thursday, District Collector Deshmukh held a meeting with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Regional Transport Department and police officials Thursday. During the meeting, the ‘The Save Life Foundation’ also presented their report on the measures to be taken to prevent accidents on Pune-Bengaluru Highway.

The report also brought some observations for highway safety. According to them, there is no separate road for pedestrians for crossing beneath the new flyover. The report has even found that the service lanes are been used as parking spaces while there is big encroachment by the vendors near the area.

The report also stated that there are no speed limits indicators here. People travelling towards Satara, Kolhapur also wait for the bus on the other of the highway. It is necessary to construct a proper bus stand and provide basic facilities for travellers.

The pile-ups and mishaps observed recently at Navale Bridge have raised concerns about the accident-hotspot. Taking cognisance of the matter, District Collector has ordered to complete the work till the deadline. He said, “The work to prevent further accidents at the new flyover has already begun. Other measures will be taken till March 31. The highway stretch will be inspected again in the first week of April along with the concerned authorities.”
