Second goods train derails on the same section in three days

Pune: A goods train derailed in the ghat section between Jambrung and Thakurwadi (Karjat-Lonavla section) on the down line on Monday. This is the second incident after a goods train derailed on Friday. Due to this, several express trains and passengers trains were either cancelled, rescheduled or diverted. The incident took place at 4.30 am when the goods train was coming towards Pune. In the ghat section, Railways use ‘Push-Pull’ system for all trains which helps them to cross the ghat section easily.

According to the Railways, Mumbai-Pune Intercity Express was cancelled and long-distance trains from Mumbai via Pune have been diverted via Igatpuri due to the derailment. However, early in the morning, the State government requested to run extra buses between Mumbai and Pune for intercity travellers to compensate for the delays.

The Central Railway administration has set up an inquiry committee and asked it to submit a report within a week.  This is the second incident, on June 28 at 10.30 a goods train was derailed on the same stretch because of which several trains were delayed and diverted from other routes.

According to Railways sources, “This could happen due to non-maintenance of the railway track between the section. There is another possibility that the ‘Push-Pull’ system might have not worked properly at that time. But the truth will come out only after the report is submitted.”

Train Number 22105 CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Train Number 12127 CSMT-Pune Intercity Express, 11007 CSMT-Pune Deccan Express and 11029 CSMT-Kolhapur Koyna Express were cancelled between CSMT and Pune, 11025 Bhusaval-Pune Express short terminated at Nashik Road and was cancelled, 11026 Pune-Bhusaval, 51318/17 Pune-Panvel-Pune Passenger, 12124 Pune-CSMT Deccan Queen, 12126 Pune-CSMT Pragati Express, 12169/70 Pune-Solapur-Pune Intercity Express were also cancelled. After cancellation of these trains, thousands of passengers could not reach their offices on time and several had to cancel their plans.

“There are three lines on this section and the derailment happened on the down line. There are two lines, middle and UP line, in the section. The middle line was also affected. After clearing the middle line in the ghat section, few trains were restored for smooth traffic,” said Central Railway Spokesperson AK Singh.

After clearing the middle line, Train Number 11301 CSMT-KSR Bengaluru Udyan Express, 11049 Ahmedabad-Kolhapur Express (originated date June 30), 12297 Ahmedabad-Pune Duronto Express (originated date June 30) and Train Number 22944 Indore-Pune Express (originated date June 30) were delayed and were running on the same route. Train Number 20821 Pune-Santragachi Humsafar Express was diverted via Daund-Manmad.
