Slum dwellers to be rehabilitated soon
Pune: “Fast track issue of No Objection Certificate (NOC) by Higher & Technical Department, Govt of Maharashtra has paved the way for rehabilitation of all 1,188 families, residing at Patil Estate slums on Survey No. 65 allotted to College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP),” said Vijay Kale, Member of Legislative Assembly ( MLA) of Shivajinagar constituency during a media interaction at CoEP on Thursday.
CoEP as landowners will be responsible for the complete rehabilitation project under Slums Rehabilitation Act (SRA). Initially, a feasibility report will be carried out and then an open market tender will be floated for the construction of SRA flats and the development of remaining land for CoEP. The college has two options for the same – researchers’ hostel or another department.
Bhalchandra Birasdar from Civil Department, CoEP, said the tender will be awarded to the bidder offering the best deal for the college. The formalities of feasibility, tendering etc., are likely to be completed within the coming six months and construction of SRA flats in 24–30 months.
In 1987, CoEP was allocated additional land for education purpose, however, it also inherited the Patil Estate slum already residing on it. The CoEP was fighting a prolonged legal battle in the court for the slums rehabilitation.
Around 100 huts were gutted in a fire last month which proved to be a blessing in disguise to rehabilitate 100 per cent residents through SRA.
