Pune, 8 July 2025: A major financial irregularity has been uncovered at the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's (MSRTC) Central Workshop in Dapodi, Pune. A special audit conducted at the site revealed a large-scale scam in the procurement of goods, involving violations of purchase procedures, use of forged documents, and deliberate misappropriation of funds. The investigation found 22 employees and officers responsible for the misconduct.

Out of the 22 individuals found guilty, 15 are still serving in the department, while the remaining 7 have retired. Since disciplinary action cannot be pursued against retired officials, a detailed inquiry was carried out against the currently employed personnel. The findings confirmed their involvement in the malpractice, and a penalty of 10% deduction from their monthly salaries has been initiated.

The issue was brought to light in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, July 8, during the Question Hour. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik responded to a starred question raised by MLA Sandeep Kshirsagar, stating that based on the seriousness of the allegations and the demand from the House members, the MSRTC will undertake a more in-depth investigation into the scam.

Minister Sarnaik also assured the House that strict disciplinary action, including suspension, will be taken against the employees and officials found guilty in the subsequent inquiry. He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in all departments, especially in public service sectors like transportation.

The special audit report indicates that the scam was not an act of individual negligence but a result of deliberate collusion among multiple employees to exploit procurement loopholes. While the recovery process from the 15 guilty officials is currently underway, legislators in the Assembly demanded harsher action, which led to the minister’s decision to reopen the investigation for stronger punitive measures.
